Out of the many times that I have driven through or breifly visited Coronado, Pacific Beach, La Jolla, Solana Beach, Cardiff, and Del Mar for a surfing session, I always see lots of people dressed up (i.e. local SD/So Cal area tourists, out of state tourists and regular locals).

When I say dressed up, I mean a nice (and probably expensive) collar/button-up shirt with slacks on guys and most young and older women wearing very nice dresses (and I'am not talking about the regular summmer dresses either) or skirts.

I personally don't see a reason to dress up when visiting these areas. I would wear something like a pair of jeans, flip flops, and a quicksilver t-shirt.

Also, if I were to take my girlfriend to one of these places and she asked me what she should wear, I would tell her "a pair of jeans, tennis shoes or flip flops and a t-shirt and or a hoodie if necessary (if the weather was cool and damp). Nothin' wrong with that, right?

San Diegans dressed up for anything is a rarity. Even businessmen down here rarely wear a jacket. I think only two or three restaurants in the county require one at dinner.

Other than at a very formal event ie. wedding or funeral, (even then you will see blue jeans!) San Diegans are about as casual dressers as they come- maybe Key West is a little more casual.

I really have no idea what you're talking about, people dress a little nicer in wealthier communities like La Jolla, Del Mar, and Coronado but I never thought it was that much. Still see plenty of shorts, t-shirts, and flip flops. And especially PB, nobody here ever dresses nice for anything. San Diego has to be one of the most casually dressed cities in the nation in my experience.

If you're going out for a nice expensive dinner in the places you mentioned (Jakes, Brigantine, those kinds of places), you might want to at least put on kahkis or nice new jeans, shoes, and a collared shirt (no tucking necessary). Other than that, you can wear whatever you want. Especially in summer, people dress down, like waaay down.

One of the things I really like about San Diego is that you can go just about anywhere dressed VERY casually, and you'll fit right in. It's one of the noticeable differences between L.A. and San Diego. In L.A., if you go to a restaurant or club looking as if you're dressed for the beach, people might look at you funny, but in San Diego, it's totally normal to wear shorts and flip-flops everywhere.
