Hi,

I just moved here from the East and, after not driving much for almost 10 years, I am getting used to it again. It is nerve-wracking along these interstates, to say the least (although people here are very patient with my creeping along -- so much nicer than the East). I have to drive from SD to LV in a few months and am wondering: do I have to drive through mountains? I am absolutely terrified of heights, to the point of panic attacks, and you have REAL mountains here, with dropoffs, not like the cozy wooded big hills I am used to. I got the directions off google but since I dont know the terrain I dont know how to interpret it. I hope I didnt bite off more than I could chew with this move.

Thanks.

Breathe easy, and don't be worring about any mountains during your treck to Las Vegas. It will be smooth, flat sailing for you! I should know, having lived there for 13 years and having made the trip from there to here many times. Enjoy the ride!

Thank you!

There's a couple of big hills, but no twisty mountain roads. You'll be fine. It's an easy drive.

Haven't been in Vegas for a while, maybe it's time.

To answer the original question, the road to LV gets a bit hilly between Barstow and Primm, the summit is around 5000 feet, but there are no dropoffs or scary mountains, it's mostly just hills.

We have done it several times. One thing I might add is that you may want to make your trek during the daylight hours ... it is very dark if you are going through the desert at night. When we go, IF it is evening when we head out, we go as far as Barstow and stay in the Hampton Inn. Then get up and its another hour or so from there (maybe 2).

And yes, as others have said nice and flat!!! No worries with that at all.

Good luck with the trip, OP!

Just take the 15 north, put on some tunes and enjoy the ride. There's a steep upgrade when you change elevations just north of san bernardino, but no windy roads or dropoffs, quite scenic actually. Enjoy the joshua trees once you get up by victorville...have a safe trip and enjoy vegas!!..peace
