There's plenty of places for day trips in the mountains, though! Especially if you want to hike. Palomar is pretty spectacular, and of course there's always Julian. At Green Valley Falls campground you can go for a day, take a picnic, and find a nice pool on the Sweetwater river to splash around in, maybe after getting nice and warm hiking up Stonewall Peak...

I've been to Palomar and Julian - they're both great. Maybe I'll do some research on Green Valley Falls campground. It sounds very nice - thanks.

I didn't think so, so much. Say, versus Walden Pond some 3000 miles east.

Think 20 degrees hotter than Temecula and you have Borrego

There does seem to be potential there. Any specific recs? I've been to Julian town center (ok only), an apple orchard (so-so), and Anzo Borrega (good). Is there a forested type area around?

Here's one of my favorite forest-y trails: LocalHikes - Cuymaca Peek Loop

Pretty much all of cuyamaca state park is forested area, so are Palomar Mountain and Laguna Mountain.
