I came last year and saw most of the beaches, including Blacks (HAHA), the USS Midway, The bridges, Sea World, Those boats near the midway, some of downtown but not much, Old Town, and even to a movie theater.

We are a young couple, and are definitely going back to Old town, and also to the SD Zoo, but what are some other ideas? How about Kayaking? I am an inexperienced kayak-er, but in decent shape. Is it safe to check out the La Jolla Caves being an inexperienced kayak-er? How are the tides? The kayak rentals were pretty cheap.

I saw some tours being offered but I like the freedom of doing what I want and not sticking with the group.

What are some other ideas? We will be there from the7th to the 14th or so.

We have a vehicle and are willing to travel as well.

Take a short kayak tour: La Jolla Kayak Tours
If you like it, rent a few kayaks and go out on your own.

My Corvette club has a big 500+ car event at Seaport Village on August 8th: http://www.cocsd.com/Flyers/MSAFlyer2010.pdf (broken link)
Spectator admission is free.

kayaking is fun and La Jolla Cove is sort of the place to do it, as cruitr noted. You might also have fun trying stand-up paddle boarding. It's kinda like surfing, kinda like kayaking. Might be fun. You can rent the boards and paddles for the day.

WRT Taco Truck tour: You definitely, definately, definately want to hit up Mariscos German's taco truck. They make hands down the best fish tacos in the city. Try their smoked marlin taco because it will change your life and make you realize you have taste buds you never knew you had.

P.S. Mariscos el Pescador is another good one; their gobernador taco - shrimp and sauteed vegetables in a spicy sauce - is what el Pescador is known for.
