Hey Everyone,

I am looking to move to California in 1-1 1/2 years. I was really interested in the San Diego area because I have heard such good things about the weather and the city. I don't need to be in the city persay, but I am definetly looking to be near the beach. On the other hand, my boyfriend is an active snowboarder and would love to be a reasonable driving distance from some good mountains to snowboard and ski in the winter months (even if it is 2-3 hours away). Listed below are some requirements I also have about the area.

- Safe community
- Town with many young professionals (a nice balance...not too old and not too many college kids running around)
- Not a crazy nightlife, but definitely have things to do at night and even during the day
- near the beach
- aesthetically pleasing area
- near industries for jobs such as pharmaceutical companies, biotech companies, etc. (since I am looking for chemistry related jobs)

Any suggestions of towns would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

area around UTC (University Towne Center)
Carmel Valley (Del Mar)
Solana Beach
Cardiff
Encinitas
La Costa
Carlsbad

Sorrento Valley, UTC, Carlsbad are pretty much where all the pharm and biotech companies are located. You'll want to stay in the north county coastal area, which is where all the above communities are located. They are one right after the other up the coast.

Thanks. Is there any good quality towns off the coast that are less pricey?

Most of the biotech and pharmaceutical are located in Sorrento Valley (west of Mira Mesa northeast of La Jolla).

I second that. Most of those communities will have much of what you are looking for

You said you wanted to definitely be near the beach, and near the pharma/biotech center of SD, so those are your best options. You can go inland a bit and maybe find some slightly cheaper rents but rent here is generally high no matter what area.

You could try Pacific or Ocean Beach further south with more of a commute.
