My husband is transferring from the San Francisco area to San Diego and will be working on the new border crossing project in San Ysidro. We have three kids ages 9, 7 and 4 and so the two important issues are schools and commute. From the research I have done, I know that Poway schools are among the best and a family friendly area, but I am concerned about the actual commute time and if it is a reverse commute or not? The other area we have considered is Eastlake in Chula Vista since it would be a shorter commute. We are used to long commute times being in the Bay Area, so I guess I just want to know if Poway is a ridiculous idea or not. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

Poway does seem like a long commute. Eastlake and Bonita do have some very good schools. Here are the schools in the whole Chula Vista area: Schools in Chula Vista Elementary School District - Chula Vista, CA | GreatSchools You can see that there are some that rate a "9".

It's a distance, but you probably wouldn't hit much traffic.

Thanks for the input. I think we'll just have to come down and see what it is like and get a feel for things. I get a 50/50 opinion on the Eastlake area... some people say it is great and others say it is too dangerous/close to border? I'd love to be in Poway for my kids- or Encinitas.

Your husband will hate you if you stick him with a commute from Poway or Encinitas. Eastlake is your best bet. Rent for a year or so before you buy anything.
