I know that living close to the beach can cause corrosion of metal surfaces due to the salt water, so I'm wondering how far from the beach I need to live in order to avoid having that happen to my car/home.

Thanks.

Interesting question! When I lived five blocks from the beach I noticed it, but when I was a mile away I didn't... And I would think it's not just distance, but also the topography of the area - if you're on a hill, or if there are tall buildings between you and the shore, it might be less noticeable?

I don't have a definitive answer for you, but it's an interesting question!

Default Salt

Well, I can answer this from direct experience. I lived at Mission Beach right off of Strandway. I parked my vehicle about 50 feet from the sand. The truck's under body suffered very bad damage. I tried everything. I kept the under body clean and even paid $300 for a useless rust sealant--nothing worked.

If you live in close proximity to the ocean, all metal--based material will corrode.

Once you're about 5 blocks from the beach it's not as bad. 10 blocks out it's no longer a serious issue. I still live in PB, but closer to Kate Sessions Park. My new neighbors report no corrosion issues similar to those I experienced at Mission Beach.
