Ok, so we are pretty new to SD and north county and last night my husband had to have an emergency root canal. Cha ching! $1,000 (he talked them down from $1,300) and it's still gonna be another 1,000 for the permanent crown - at least that is what they're charging in north county. Does that sound about right? Or should he drive somewhere else to get a better deal? I ask my native San Diegan friends and they advised that we DON'T go to TJ at this time.

Any suggestions?

If you *don't* have insurance (which I assume you don't, given the prices you quoted) go to TJ. There's absolutely no reason not to go down for dental work during the daytime, especially if you're just taking a cab to the dentist and back (and quite frankly, I don't have an issue with being down there after dark either) Unless you're associated with the drug cartels or smugglers.

If you *do* have insurance, the high cost could be because you went to an emergency dentist after hours? Find someone reputable and have the crown done there. When I had an emergency root canal the price they quoted me for the crown was WAY high. I recommend Dr. Cantonwine in Pacific Beach- been going to him for years.

Fees sound about right. The crown fee depends to some extent on the type of crown (porcelain fused to metal, gold, partial coverage vs. complete coverage, Cerec, etc.). Don't go to Tijuana.

Molar root canals are sometimes best referred to endodontists (dental specialists who do root canals) but there are many general dentists who are competent in that area.

Check out the Mexico forum. There are several threads on Mexican dentists, and you can get a referral. As soon as I can afford it, that's where I'll be going.
