With the price of gold up over $1000 I was thinking about trying my hand at a little gold panning and I was wondering if anyone here had already tried it? I figure even if I don't find much gold it would still be a fun weekend to go camping in our local mountains but since Julian is well known for gold deposits (with Romana and Escondido having minor deposits) I thought I'd give that a try. Does anyone here know anything about panning for gold or a decent place to start looking? I quick search on the internet revealed a couple of possibilities though I'm concerned about there being existing claims and I certainly don't want to be a claim jumper. Any advice would appreciated.

The best areas according to internet resources are Wynola Creek off Wynola Rd and Banner Creek by the old Banner Mine Rd. The mother load country this is not but there just might be some gold left. According to the California Department of Mines between 1870 and 1959 a total of 220,000 ounces of gold were mined in those areas.

The New California Gold Rush | NBC San Diego
That link has two great videos about "The New California Gold Rush" with people not only flooding in to the historic '49ers gold country but also into the San Gabriel Mountains outside of LA looking for gold. I have to admit it looks like hard physical work and no one is getting rich but if a person can spend a weekend in the great outdoors and make a few bucks while he is at it then I'd say it is a weekend well spent. Some of these guys are finding nuggets worth $10,000 so it seems a few people do get lucky.

Hell, maybe I can put my geology degree to work (doing more then helping polluters get away with not cleaning up their messes which is what the consulting business seems to be all about) and maybe find a bit of gold. Sure, there is no way I'll be quitting my day job but there are worse things then spending your weekends in the great outdoors even if you don't find much gold. Besides the girlfriend likes camping too so why not do it?

If you're talking about the Himalaya mine then someone already has a claim on that one.
I understand in WW2 people made a killing mining large quartzite crystals near Smuggler's Cave.
