It's no secret that SD isn't among the top echelon of places with the highest salaries, ie, DC, Bay Area, Boston, but would it surprise you to know that in per capita personal income San Diego ranks 28th among 366 metro areas? Also, San Diego City ranks 5th among the 95 largest cities in median household income, and 15th among the metro areas, besting bigger and more corporate-friendly cities like Atlanta, LA, Dallas, Chicago and Houston.

Go for it!

Left SD in '08 to move out to NC for a bit and took a $10K/yr hit. Still seemed like I came out ahead in terms of cost of living, though. Came back in Oct '10 and got a $19K/yr raise over my NC salary (net $9K/yr over my SD salary from before I left).

I'm an engineer for a defense industry company.

Mike

I work for MTS and they are always hiring for both classified jobs and admin positions
We get a bump this spring.

I have not just moved here, but I like to let others know about MTS.

I got a bump in both salary and I pay less in taxes from where I came from ... Canada. I'm in the engineering field.

If people are saying San Diego doesn't pay well, then I have a lot to look forward to if I move to another state with even higher salaries and lower taxes.

My San Diego's job pay 14K higher than the one in Houston. However, when you factor in the tax (state tax and higher tax bracket because of higher salary) and the difference in employer's contribution, I have a little bit less to put in my pocket accepting the SD job. However, for me, it's WELL worth taking a little pay hit to live and work in San Diego!
