Can I get a 3/4BR house in a nice area of Poway for $600k or less? I have seen some on Redfin but I am completely unfamiliar with the area and I've been reading about some parts of Poway that are less than desirable. Is it worth looking here or should I explore other options? (Like everyone else schools and safety are top 2 priorities)

You can get a 3/4 bedroom home in a nice area of Poway for under $600,000. The general advice given in Poway is to stay north of Poway road.

Poway is a nice place. So it depends what you mean by 'nice area.'

Here's a nice 4 bd home in a slightly older part of Poway:
SDLookup.com | 14759*Alando*Pl - MLS# 100069131

This.

Although there are some not-so-nice areas north of Poway road and some decent homes south of it.

A nice home (depending on definition of 'nice') can easily be found in Poway for under $500k.

Figure about $180 per sq. ft. in a nice area.

Poway is a nice neighborhood. One of my coworkers lives there and absolutely loves it. It is safe, clean, perfect for families.

Even the 'ghetto' areas of Poway - parts of Midland Rd, pre Communiy rd, etc are Disneyland compared to parts of SD like Commercial St and parts of Downtown. I'm moving back there at the end of Febuary - paying a lot more $$$ than I usually drop on rent. $450-500/mo gets you trashy rooms.. Pay 550+deposit for anything de3cent. Wish I was buying a house though

The word "ghetto" does not mean a neighborhood one doesn't like the looks of, as so many people all over this forum in so many threads have been using it.

It means an area where people are forced to remain for political or economic or social reasons. I can't believe that is true about this part, or any part, of Poway. Possibly true of Commercial Street, since the people who hang out there are most likely homeless. I can't think of any other part of the San Diego area that even comes close to qualifying as "ghetto".

Using the word this lightly sorta' trivializes the plight of those who truly are stuck in the ghettos.

on SDlookup i only see 2 homes under 180/sq ft (that was by selecting north county inland and then selecting poway)

most of the homes are well over 200/sq ft--am i missing some listings?

Try Realtor.com they have a fairly complete representation of everything on MLS. Of course you have to remember what you are looking at are asking prices. It pays to check how long some of these listings have been on the market, and to check actual sales prices in that zip code. There is also a site called Trulia - Real Estate, Homes for Sale, Sold Properties, Apartments for Rent that is good for that, although their “listing” prices are sometimes skewed. Good luck
