This has got to be San Diego's worst most disgusting blighted area. Literally a homeless shopping cart tent city for a whole block. Is there a more trashy place than Commercial St just before Commercial & 25th st? You can see it from the trolley. Being stuck in the ghetto for a month gives you a whole new respect and appreciation for the finer things in life you may have once taken for granted. When I get out of this ghetto situation and move back to Poway next month, I'm going to be very thankful...

Just when you get past Euclid you see this cluster of slum city dwellings that look like Mexico City in the US..all dilipadated ghetto trash. Don't think you'll even get a decent room here in SD for less than $550/mo! What a difference +$100 makes. Anything less is garbage. Oh, and about the fleas - take B complex vitamins twice daily and they leave you alone

I didn't see anything ghetto there on google street views, but I believe you. I will say this though, when I visited, the homeless people were some of the most polite I'd ever seen. They didn't beg or harass, they just sat there with their signs. In Chicago they'll chase you down the street.

I read about Commercial happenings last year. It appears that its intentionally going down the tubes for redevelopment purposes but that gamble may not pay off. If the SEDC goes down as well as other redev agencies, it may be a long time before that area gets fixed up.

I think I also recall that some groundwater there may be contaminated.

It was much worse in that general area before Petco Park was built.

I have lurked at this site for a long time, finally decided to sign up at make a post.

Yes, much of the Downtown San Diego are looks like something out of a Mad Max movie. I have lived downtown on and off for the last 8 years and it seems to be just getting worse and worse.

I agree with OP about the Commercial St area, it is just insane, bums everywhere. If you go to the I-5 underpass at 17th and commercial a lot of times there is no walking space on the sidewalk........tents, garbage filled shopping carts and bums block what should be a footpath. Go around this areas in the morning, there is a feeding program (among many) , you will literally see hundreds of shopping cart zombies all over the place.

Sometimes the downtown Post Office will literally be encircled with garbage filled shopping carts and their bedraggled owners. Someitmes the stench of urnie in this area makes me GAG.

Look at the Horton Plaza Park, they had to shut down the fountain becuase it was getting polluted with urine and feces. That park area does not serve tourist or taxpayers, it is filled with the dirty homeless bumming money or doing drugs/alcohol. And now they are talking about expanding the "PARK", haha, what kind of nuts are running this city???

Check out the underpass by City College sometime. You'll have your choice of shopping carts.
