Hello,

we will move from Austria to San Diego for one year in June 2011. We'll probably be living in/around La Jolla, close to UCSD. We have 2 kids (5 and 2 years old) and would like to know how they can meet other kids (at their age). Unfortunately, we can't spend a lot of money for preschool or kindergarten, we definitely can't affort 5 days a week for both kids (since only my husband will be working). Moreover, we've heard that there are long waiting lists for good schools.

Are there alternatives for us? Where can we meet other parents with kids?

Best,
Trixi

When my kids were little I belonged to mothers groups. Some were formal, organized with meetings for moms and child care for the kids. Some were informal, just a bunch of friends who found each other and met in each others homes for adult conversation while the kids played around us. Both settings could lead to additional play dates etc . You might check for meet up groups for parents with young children in the area in which you live once you get settled in.

OK, but where do you check such groups? How shall I find them?

Best,
Trixi

If you are interested, local churches can often be great places for young families to connect with other young families. Once you find a place to live, you may want to see what churches are in the area.

Church is a good way as Ragnar mentioned. My wife and I also met other parents in various classes like swimming classes for our daughter. So a good way might be specific events geared towards kids like various programs for kids.

We made some really good friends that way in our city and also our kids play together once or twice a week. In fact, a group from the classes get together so all our kids are friends now. We take turns in our houses hosting lunches each week so our kids can play together.

Funny -- last time I lived in San Diego, I left to move TO Austria. One beautiful place to another. All the best to you.

The local parks are a great way to meet other parents with kids. So are the programs in the YMCA.

You can try meetup.com and search for parent groups there. San Diego City moms is one great group.
