What school is looked upon as the most prestigious (in the business world) in San Diego?

UCSD is probably the best one. It's actually in La Jolla though. Any UC is going to be better than surrounding colleges(generally, not always). University of SD is next and SDSU is after that.

jessemh is right, UCSD is the most prestigious school (academic-wise) in the area. SDSU on the other hand is known for being a party school. USD is the wealthy private school. Point Loma Nazarene is another small private school. Cal State University, San Marcos (CSUSM) is the newest 4 year university and is still in it's developing stage.

I think that's it for 4 year universities in the area.

UCSD is one of the top ranked public schools in the country. I saw one list a few years ago that ranked it #5. I don't think most people realize that. It certainly surprised me.

What about in terms of graduate studies (e.g MBA) and are most graduates sticking around in SD or moving out to LA or San Fran where there's a more robust job market.

Depends. Deloitte and Booz Allen are here so they tend to suck up MBA's who want to be in SD. UCSD has the Rady School's MBA program which is focused around technology management and geared towards the San Diego market.

It all depends what you want to do, most people who stay in SD do so because of lifestyle and sacrifice a little job opportunity as a result.

So it seems UCSD is the school of choice amongst the other SD schools- how does it compare to the other UC universities? I have been to UCLA and it has a very gorgeous campus and is located in a nice part of town. Can anyone comment on the UCSD campus?

UCSD is definitely the top choice in SD and actually it's standing has improved greatly against all UC schools over the last ten years. Campus is expansive, well manicured. Mix of older buildings and new buildings. There is no real "center", rather multiple large clusters of buildings. It's a bit of a sleepy campus overall, but there is plenty to do outside of school. It's worth a visit.

Also, for those that can't get into UCSD right out of high school, there is a program through our JC's here. IT's called the TAG program (transfer admission guarantee). YOu start at the JC level, and with a 2.8 or higher, you are guaranteed admission into UCSD after completing 20 something credits with a 2.8 average. Cuyamaca, Mesa and Grossmont all participate in this program.
