I was also unimpressed with MXN. It is not bad and I would eat there again, but it is not one of those places I look forward to.

Habaneros on Mira Mesa, though, is one of those places I salivate over.

El Camol in Poway Rd. is also very good.

Las Quatro Milpas in Logan Heights is an institution in San Diego. It is basically a breakfast/lunchette type of place and closes by 3:00pm. By 11:30 am there is a line on Logan Ave waiting to get. There is an interesting mix of downtown businessmen, cops and ff'ers, and down-home SD folks you will see in line.

The menudo is awesome, but usually runs out early.

The tacos and tamales are simple but good.

The tortillas are the best in San Diego. They also sell them by the dozen for take home.

The Chorizo con huevos (rice, beans, chorizo and egg) is a trademark dish and a meal in itself.

This is a no frills joint and you wont have any wait staff fawning over you. it is a basic lunch counter and the food is served right in front of you. There are picnic style tables and mix matched chairs to sit on. The place has been there at least 45 years that i know and my father used to go way back in the day.

Agreed. There are others shops that have opened over the years, but this place has stood the test of time. Its definitely the lard that gives it that extra flavor
FYI: Its cash only, unless things have changed.

Has anyone had Mexico City cuisine? Ranas in Spring Valley is really a gem.
They cover just about everything there you find in MX City from Pambazos to Alambres.
I highly recommend the Pollo en Cacahuate or Caldo Tlalpeno. But everything there is pretty awesome so cant go wrong.
Worth a drive in the area.

I miss good Mexican food. Old Town Mexican Cafe and Roberto's are my personal favorites. I will be out there for vacation in a month and I guarantee I will gain 10 pounds.

I wasn't overly impressed.
