how long is the highway drive on the 5 into downtown from Carlsbad and Encinitas?
With no traffic, about 35 minutes from Encinitas and 45 minutes from Carlsbad. With traffic, an hour plus. The PM commute is particularly brutal and you are going to slog all the way from Del Mar Heights well into Carlsbad. I would probably take the coaster. It's just a long way no matter how you slice it, on a very highly traveled highway.

Yeah definitely look at the Coaster. If you are working downtown its an awesome opportunity to not have to drive.

The Coaster makes two stops in Carlsbad and one in Encinitas. If you are truly working downtown (near the Santa Fe Depot) I'd look into it. Commuting from North County, I think where you are in terms of North-South is just as important as how far you are from the freeway. If you're in Encinitas but you get on at Manchester Ave in Cardiff, that's a lot better in terms of commute time than if you get on at Leucadia Ave. Same goes for Carlsbad. The further south, the better.

I took the Coaster from Encinitas to DT (Santa Fe Station) from its inception...well over 12 years. Door to door it took me average about 1 and a quarter hours each way. You have to drive to the station, wait for the train, wait between stops, get off at Santa Fe station. From there you would either have to walk or take the trolley, depending on where you would be working. I loved it because I hated to drive that far every day and it saved me gas, parking, insurance and wear and tear on my car. I made many friends on the train and you can read, laptop, etc. it's a beautiful ride along the coast. But it isn't necessarily a time saver. But definitely less stressful. If you're an impatient person, the whole process might be a bit too much.
