I'm looking to take a vacation out to San Diego most likely at the end of next month . I want to at least try out the mexican food because I've heard from friends and family out there that it's really good. In addition, I saw this BBQ place on food network one time but I can't remember it (Bob's BBQ, I think not sure though) which I wanna try. Look forward to hearing some recommendations

If you want the 'authentic' SD Mexican food experience, just hit the local taco shop in any shopping plaza. Pretty much every one has one, and they're all pretty darn good. People will argue which ones are the best, and they are a bit different from each other, but for the most part you can't go wrong.

For BBQ, the popular one would be Phil's BBQ. Although, I did recently come across a place in Poway called Jimmy's that's not too shabby either.

Mike

Phil's BBQ... by Sports Arena.

And the Mexican food is great. And if you're daring, you could go across the border and get real Mexican food (from Mexico)

There is a good mexican place where I live called Mi Ranchito. Look it up on Yelp. They actually make new things and bring out samples for people to try.

They have some of the best salsa and hands down the BEST hot carrots I've ever eaten. I don't know what they soak the carrots in, but it taste unlike every other mexican restaurant.

BBQ is not quite mainstream here in San Diego. As already mentioned, Phil's BBQ in Point Loma is probably the best there is: Phils BBQ Restaurant | Home of the Best BBQ and Catering in San Diego

On the other hand, there's a Mexican restaurant on every corner. When out-of-town guests visit us, we usually take them to Old Town for Mexican food. We were in Cafe Coyote with some guests last weekend. It's a bit touristy and everyone had a good time: Mexican Foods | Authentic Mexican Food | Best Mexican Food | Kid Friendly Restaurant | Old Town Cafe San Diego

Edit: If you want to try a Mexican dish that's pretty much unique to the San Diego area, ask for 'carne asada fries.' I've never seen carne asada fries offered anywhere else in the USA.

I'm currently working in Point Loma, and Phil's always has a line. Sometimes the line is all the way around the back of the restaurant, so it must be pretty good.

Mexican - I have never had anything better anywhere in the country as Fidel's in Solana Beach. I hope to be eating there this weekend after flying in from Texas. Been waiting years dreaming of eating there again. My mouth is watering just typing this.

Phil's has a good grilled meat product which they briefly finish in a smoker for a few minutes but it isn't real BBQ. Real BBQ is smoked for hours and unfortunately that's not something which is big in San Diego.

It's not that great, and it's CERTAINLY not good enough to wait in line for an hour for.

I've personally never quite understood the popularity of that place.

They also have a room that they rent out for events, so maybe that's what the line is for. I would wait in a line all the way around the back just to eat at a restaurant.
