Planning a trip to Lake Tahoe for the May long weekend.
Any tips on where to stay, activities and where to go for food?

Might want to try another forum like Sacramento. This is the San Diego forum.

In short however, Lake Tahoe is split into two predominant areas. North and South.
The North is more residential, scenic. The South is more touristy and has more activities for the casual traveler.

Personally, I stay at the Hyatt up there and its one the best properties I have been to in that area. I am not in the party zone so much anymore, so the more tranquil settings is more to my liking.

Yeah, I'd agree with Shmoov. When we go we stay in a house in Incline Village. The Hyatt is really close to where we stayed last year. GREAT area! There are several grocery stores close by. We loved walking to the Lake which was only 2 blocks from our house. If you have kids, there is a small playground near the Lake right near the Hyatt.

Just a terrific area! I assume you'll have a rental car or your car so it's fairly easy to get around but I really enjoyed the Incline Village area.

We're heading there again next winter to go skiing and our kids loved the tubing and sledding hills.

Try rental sites like VRBO® is Vacation Rentals By Owner (http://www.vrbo.com - broken link) or HomeAway Vacation Rentals: Beach Houses, Condos, Cabins, Villas & Vacation Rental Homes and I'm sure you can find several rental houses. I agree that renting a house is the best way to play it with a group that size. We almost never stay in hotels anymore when we travel and we travel over 100 days a year. We really much prefer renting houses or apartments. Or if you live in an interesting and desirable area (which San Diego is!) you can try a home exchange website like www.homeexchange.com which is AMAZING. We swap out our rental properties a ton and never had a bad experience. It's really the way to go.

Have fun!

I live in the area and have for a while. It does really depend on what you're looking for. If your looking for laid back, outdoorsy type stuff(hiking, cycling, kayaking) I would recommend North Lake Tahoe.

Here is a link to cabins for rent for that size of group. Check out the Dollar Point locations:
Lake Tahoe Vacation Rentals ~ www.Tluxp.com ~ 800.581.8828

In North Lake the night-life is pretty minimal. Crystal Bay Club Casino Crystal Bay Club Casino on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Biltmore would be your best bet, but there are plenty of good restaraunts to enjoy(Check Garwoods, Jake's on the Lake, Sunnyside)These are the most popular but there are many to explore. Shopping is located in Tahoe City. Also, if you consider this area, it is a short drive to Squaw Valley where there is shopping, hiking, some bars and restaraunts.

Now, if you're looking for action, South Lake would be the recommendation. Harrahs, Harveys, Mont Bleu, and other casino close to the lake with clubs, restaraunts, and late night activity. Much more touristy, but you can also find cabins for rent up there as well. Emerald Bay is beautiful and a short drive away. No beach access really but you can park and check out some great sights. Also, there is an old Dixie boat that you can enjoy dinner and drinks for sunset which might be a good activity. Daytime Scenic Cruises & Evening Dinner Cruises - Zephyr Cove Resort or even better Lake Tahoe Cruises | Lake Tahoe Activities | Tahoe Bleu Wave If you really get fired up, there is a little pocket community of El Dorado County/Placerville that has some great little wineries. El Dorado Winery Association

Hope this helps.

Enjoy.
