If you were getting it right now, who would you choose for home phone/internet service. (Don't consider TV service)

Please vote in poll and say why if you have a definite reason or experience. I only have 2 weeks to make a decision. Thx all.

Dog,

I am actually ditching cable entirely. Cox is awful in regards to the services you get for the $$$ where I am now and I dont have any other choice except satellite or Cox.
I am just keeping the internet with Cox and setting up my own HTPC using Hulu or Boxee to watch the shows I want to watch. I could care less about most of the basic channels that I pay at least $50 for and anything live I do watch is on network which is OTA.

I used to have U-verse downtown and it was on a completely different level than traditional coax type of cable service like Cox. With IPTV you have far more control of your content and DVR recordings via a PC or iPhone etc. With Cox, its just cable and thats it. Granted, I hear U-Verse can be terrible in some parts of the County. The building I was in had it preconfigured and never had any problems with service.

The one problem I have with Cox and the reason I am ditching it is the billing and features. With U-verse, if I wanted to upgrade or downgrade a feature, it was as easy as logging on and ticking some boxes. Instant change. With Cox, I need to speak a CS rep which so far has led to some horrendous wait times to drop a movie channel or add it etc.

As far as home phone service, I dont use it as I am cell phone bound. But when I do need to use a "home number" I use Google Voice via the chat client or you can use Skype from your PC as an alterative. I think Costco also sells a VOIP box that you plug into your internet connection and it then plugs into your phone. The service is free and there is no monthly/annual charge within the 48 states and the long distance rates are fairly inexpensive per min.

I'm also going to be looking for a good internet provider that is fast and dependable. I don't watch too much TV except on the weekends but the kids do. We do have Netflix and use Hulu quite a bit as well but many shows aren't included. We also use Apple TV as well which is great but can add up renting shows and movies.

I think service is just dependent on areas as some people tell me they love AT&T or Cox and others tell me they hate it. I guess we'll wait to see where we buy a house and see what is available in that area and go with the fastest provider.

As far as home phone, we haven't used one in a while.... we use www.vonage.com and have for the past 7 years and it's great. We have family in several countries and the great thing is many places you can call free for the $30 monthly charge. We also travel an incredible amount each year and the great thing is we can bring the Vonage router with us and have access to our home phone line wherever we go that has internet (virtually everywhere). It's so very convenient and saves us a ton of money in long distance charges overseas where we have a lot of family and friends.

We don't plan to get a local home phone line. Like Shmoov, we'll use our cellphones and our Vonage home phone line. The call quality of our Vonage line is crystal clear...even when we travel overseas.

of the three I would take ATandT but they are not all that great either. I would not have COX if I had a choice.
