I would think initially it would start to go down the tubes fast, but only because more people can capture it on video and are exposing a long-standing trend of police corruption that yes has been there for a looong time. Then the SDPD (and law enforcement agencies everywhere) will have to straighten up their ways, battle corruption, maybe get more funding for more officers and better qualified officers, so less of these incidents happen.

Hopefully citizen videographers will make them become a little more honest and clean up their act! But didn't I hear some rumblings about a law making it illegal for citizens to capture these acts on video??

SDPD cop arrested on rape charge - SignOnSanDiego.com

One day after the Chief of Police made a speech about police misconduct no longer being tolerated a SDPD officer was arrested for rape.

Do we want to keep low balling compensation and scraping the bottom of the barrel or do we want to do what it takes to get the best officers in our area? You pay the least you get the worst. It's as simple as that.

Throwing money at the problem won't necessarily solve it. There's more of a systemic problem going on here, and it starts with the man in charge.

Being cheap won't convince better folks to start working at SDPD. If you notice other departments don't have this problem and ALL of them pay better. The hard reality is the best folks all go to other departments and the only reason anyone signs up with SDPD is because they will pay someone to attend the academy. The problem is as soon as they graduate from the academy the best folks all leave for PDs in other local cities because the pay is any where from 20%-30% higher with better benefits and better working conditions. You can continue to say "throwing money at the problem won't solve it" but I can 100% guaranty that not paying at least the average wage for the job will mean the best officers will continue to go some where else instead of to the SDPD. Yes, this is a money issue because we pay so damn little, we demand so much more (like only one cop per patrol car instead of using partner teams), we have to accept folks which other departments wouldn't even consider.

It's the same with teachers. Yes, I know the city is filled with trailer trash who can barely pay for their Hyundai & trailer rent, retirees who don't want to spend a penny more then necessary, and carpet baggers who only want to stay a few years before going back home but we aren't spending enough on the basics. We can refuse to pay the salaries needed to attract quality cops & teachers or we can continue to hope the slim at the bottom of the barrel will be "good enough". I for one would like better if not the best cops & teachers and if we want that then we have to pay for that. There is no two ways about it.

Every job and every company that pays basically peanuts generally has worse employees. A person with real talent will simply not settle for comparatively meager pay when someone else offers them more for their skills.

Very well said, all one really has to do is look at the cops in neighboring cities to get an idea of morale.

Some of these guys were big dollar long term employees. I think money isn't the issue here.

Overall, crime is down. I'd think if Cops weren't doing their jobs it would be up. I believe there is something else to this. If anything it would stem from Pensions or failing props being constantly in the spotlight that may be enticing a hatred of the public.
