I have a friend who wants to come out to Carlsbad in Aug. for a three-day stay, and asked if I knew of any rentals. The few places I know don't meet her criteria, so I've come for suggestions. Anyone know somewhere that would fit this bill:

A one-bedroom (She mentioned something about her parents coming to visit, so I think a hotel is out, because they'd need an extra room)

Available midweek (no weekend stay)

Child-friendly (4 and 1 year olds)

Ideally in Carlsbad (because anything south will probably already be booked due to the racing season)

And the kicker: She'd like to find something for about $150/night.

Mission impossible? Thanks for any help!

Have you tried?
VRBO® is Vacation Rentals By Owner (http://www.vrbo.com/ - broken link)

probably impossible for that price range...but could try VRBO.com to see if any places will do a few days. My guess is this time of year they can rent monthly with no issue. Your friend could also try priceline.com for a suite.

Yeah, check out VRBO or Homeaway.com Homeaway actually owns VRBO but they are two separate listing companies. I've rented from both many many times (I'm actually staying in an ocean front condo as I write this from a VRBO property in Kauai). They have great properties.

And they police the owners to make sure the properties are real. Not like some fake properties you might find on Craigslist. I also list all of my rental properties I own on those sites and they are great.

However I'm not sure if any owners will want to hassle with only a 3 night stay. Most in the area have a week minimum but doesn't hurt asking if an owner has a hole in their schedule.

VRBO is good because you can type one email and then use the same one for any other property which saves time. Good luck.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I know she has checked one of the websites mentioned but not the other so I will pass all the info along to her. Appreciate the help!

Also, I thought I'd mention this... if you live in an interesting city and have a nice property, you might want to sign up for HomeExchange.com

It's a GREAT service. Only $99 a year and you can swap properties. Of course with only a 3 night stay you probably will need to offer at least a week but it's super fabulous and there are several owners in San Diego in that program.

We've stayed in La Jolla before in a home exchange and it was great! We typically travel for longer periods but I have gone to cities for a short stay like you are doing and I'll offer a stay up to 7-10 days in my property and it's worked out great.

I can't say enough great things about it. A great way to see the world. I know it sounds weird at first but we've never had any problems at all. Granted, we probably wouldn't swap out our principle home that we live in (we own many rental properties that we use to swap) but surprisingly many of the places we have exchanged for were the principle home were the people have lived.
