Hi. We are moving from Sydney, Australia to San Diego at the end of the year. I have children aged 3, 10, 14 and 15. My husband will be working near Poway and I have heard that is the best area for schools? I am worried about bullying for my 10 year old son and also for my older girls. They are so nervous - having a different accent and not knowing anyone. Any recommendations for any schools (I guess I need middle and high schools, and also a school for my 3 year old a couple of days a week). I'm not really sure what the systems is over there for day care etc!!
Is Carlsbad or Encinitas ok for schooling? How far would the commute be to Poway?
Also what areas can we live in to be in the right district for the schools?? Ideally I would love to be able to walk to a park, and have transport for the kids to get to malls etc.
Any information at all would be fantastic because at the moment I have no clue
Thanks very much.

Poway has the best school district, and if your husband is going to be working near there, you might want to think about living there.

Poway schools are very good. So, if your husband is working there, I would live there as well. Our children all went through the Poway Unified School District and all did very well through high school and college. Some CA State web sites to review test scores:

Best of luck!

Your children and their Aussie accents will most likely be seen as very cool, and I'm guessing they won't have too many problems making friends.

I would tell your kids that they'll be fine....people will like their Aussie accents. And Poway schools are really good and it's a good suburban community.

You might want to warn your kids, though, that the average yank can't distinguish an Aussie from a South African from an English/British accent.

Remember that the Poway school district covers adjacent cities. Depending on your budget, you may want to look at the parts on the western side of the 15 freeway (city of San Diego) because it tends to be a fair amount cooler in the summer. Here are the boundary maps: PUSD Boundary Maps
