I'm guessing you're in your mid-20's.

Maybe North Park or downtown would be a good choice.

Where are you going to work?

Are you looking for a party spot, or a place for young professionals, or...?

fingers crossed. In my experience once the background check starts to happen, things are looking really good-but then that is usually after 1 and typically 2 face to face interviews, so what is different about your situation is they have not had an in person interview .

Good Luck to you - I'll say a prayer! Keep your attitude and mind right and don't let folks get you down. Hopefully your face to face will go well, but if they've started the background check, which cost money, it seems the job is yours to lose.

Typically in the tech industry they will do a short recruiter/HR phone interview, followed up by a technical phone interview (~30 minutes). If all goes well, they usually fly you in for an all day in-person interview in which you are asked many probing technical questions, taken out to lunch, then let out in the afternoon.

Usually when they get to this stage they are ready to hire.

I'm guessing that this job is in tech/bio-tech because La Jolla has lots of that and $80k would be in the junior/mid level for that industry.

My fingers are crossed for you. It sounds like a great opportunity. If your company is near La Jolla there are a couple of neighborhoods that you might like that wouldn't have long commutes, but have a lot of local amenities; Pacific Beach, UTC (not University City, that's more of a family-centered neighborhood), Mission Beach, or Downtown.

Although, downtown is starting to add to your commute a bit, it still might be worth checking out if you like to be in the center of things. I would recommend Pacific Beach the most as it has a great vibe, local hangouts, lots of places to eat and built-in entertainment with the beach close by.
