I was down there last night. Granted I left around 9:00 PM and it wasn't a weekend, but I didn't really feel unsafe.

The people that complain about PB probably shouldn't be down there in the first place.

It is not intended to be a white collar community. It is a place for students and younger people. It is not intended to be Newport Beach.

People complain about how there are a lot of troublemakers down there.

If you do go down there, it seems if you are the type of person that avoids trouble, it probably won't find you.

I lived there in the late 90s and the vibe has changed, but it doesn't seem that bad.

When the bars let out, the meatheads do their thing. It's also kind of a dump.

Can you elaborate? If I am walking down the street minding my own business, will I be attacked?

Are they confrontational or just obnoxious?

It is possible I need to be there later. However, I disagree that it is a dump.

I actually think it is aesthetically nice.

Well, you wanted to know why PB is viewed a certain way. Its not so much about how you would potentially be attacked, mugged or otherwise.

Taking the generalities of anything and applying it to your lifestyle and choices is probably not the wisest.

Its a dense area with lots of clubs, bars and testosterone.....just like ANY other area that caters to that lifestyle.
I used to see the same crap downtown with the highly visible sports and bars and nightclubs. It happens.

If you mind your own business, I dont see why you should be alarmed. I have never heard of guerilla tactics used on the streets where its like being in some war zone.

PB is no Skyline, but you have to watch your back.

I think it is safe if you follow common sense.

PB is hipster. It is full of mostly young people, and has the highest concentration of bars in the county.

PB is tacky. There are tattoo shops located next to smoke shops located next to porn stores located next to liquor stores. The neon signs, jarheads and little sluts that roam the streets at night are enough to make a grown man run for cover. If that doesn't sound like a low class, urban ghetto, what does?

PB is not unsafe, it's just akin to a college party every night which isn't to everyone's liking. I personally avoid it at nighttime.

I lived there for 15 years and it can get pretty stupid. If you are in the wrong place at the wrong time you can get your ass kicked. It's not as gang bangish as it was while you could drink on the beach but no booze ban can keep the losers from flocking in. High auto crime rate. Lot's of drunk related stuff late at night. There is a reason the place is covered in Cops.
