Doesn't look like I get to claim reimbursement for the few hours of forced non-wage-earning.

Hmmm, seems like I'm in the minority by thinking SDG&E should absolutely pay for food spoilage. I didn't have any issues at home, but millions were lost by restaurants and grocers.

Restaurants and grocers, sure, but they should really be insured for such losses in the first place. It's not a whole lot different than if the power went out during an earthquake or a flood, except this time there's someone specific to point a finger at, rather than the folks who are uninsured in a natural disaster expecting the government to make up their losses.

But really, anyone who stands to lose that much inventory should REALLY be insured.

As for residential claims? I can't imagine anyone would have THAT much stuff in the fridge. Even if you just spent $200 on groceries, how much of it was stuff that needs to be thrown out? Frozen stuff would have been fine, and who has THAT much meat, dairy, eggs, and perishable condiments in the fridge? How much trouble is it worth to claim like $50 that you probably won't see for quite a long time?

It depends on what they find out when then figure out why this all happened. If it's negligence on the part of SDG&E then no, I'm not kidding. I'm nearing retirement age and saving as much as I can for retirement. I'm at the peak of my career, earnings-wise, so this is a non-trivial monetary loss. It's nothing compared to other losses, but it's not nothing to me. If I were in a traffic accident, say, due to someone else's negligence, I most certainly would claim to be reimbursed for lost wages. Why not for negligence in this case?

But as I said, it depends largely on what they find out really caused the blackout to spread.

And trouble is, since they're a utility they'll just pass the cost of reimbursments on to the customers ...

Did anyone else's frozen stuff come through unscathed? We left the door to the freezer shut the whole time and it doesn't look like anything melted, even the ice in the door.

I'm also in the minority that thinks SDG&E should pay, at least for those whose livelihoods were affected. Yes, the cause for that could have just as easily been by a natural disaster, but so what? It's not like I can take a baseball bat to your car and say 'hey, the damage would've been the same if a tree branch fell on it'. Of course, I only think SDG&E should pay on principle. We all know who REALLY ends up paying if they have to fork any cash out..........

Conventional wisdom is that frozen stuff is good for 2 days.
