Remember the old trite saying of "counting to ten" before doing something. I'm not saying we should go back to the perceived "good ole days" but it just seems other people around us are angrier and therefore "you" are angrier. Even though folks list the issues that are broadcast to us 24/7 over the "lame stream" media, I don't think that accounts for the quick trigger on the temper. You are correct it does seem to go from A to Z at light speed on the anger meter a lot these days.

What came to my mind is the cycle of escalation in violence. I think that some people are driving around already at level 3 so when something happens they are ready to explode. Scary thought but at times it is borne out. It is obviously not the majority of us but it makes us more aware that when someone is zigging in and out of traffic best to watch out..

Yes it is. However, its still an American city. I still think cities in Japan are safer, like Yokohama for example (the Japanese San Diego). What do you think, since you're living in Japan? Or maybe SD's crime rate is comparable to Japan's cities. Its sad to say that some cities in the U.S. feel like you're in a 3rd world country.

Welcome to the big city.

I wouldn't say San Diego proper is especially dangerous, except for a few areas in the shady part of town (Logan Heights, Memorial Park).

The rest of the county is all over the board. I live in Poway, and apart from a few Geezer Bandit sightings the biggest crimes are sporadic burglaries. Coastal North County is similarly nice, although there are a ton of vehicle break-ins at La Jolla Shores and other places where surfers leave their cars unattended for long periods.

On the other hand, East County and the border region can get a bit sketchy. Better keep your wits about you in Chula Vista. Alpine and Julian are nice, but Lakeside is Meth Lab City, and El Cajon might be the most dangerous city in the county.

It's just a matter of knowing before you go. If you've got questions, ask a local-- or use this website.

As for the freeway shooter, it's worrisome, but hardly an everyday occurrence. I guess the way we deal with random acts of violence is to realize that they're just that-- random-- and not likely to repeat.

The violence and the shadow of it's spectres is dramatic, and at time pervasive e.g. when every electronic billboard for two hundred miles talked about a shooter a highway crzy person.

I am out of this discussion for now. It's unfortunate that the anger I speak about has taken hold here.
ADVICE: Lose the chip.

2010:

San Diego: population 1.3 million, 29 murders, 300 rapes
Anchorage metro: population 350 thousand, 13 murders, 343 rapes
There are more single men in Alaska. Apparently, aggressive and horny.

I just sit and laugh at you guys that think San Diego is "so dangerous".
Go to the Soundview or hunts point area of the South Bronx.
You will then learn what an dangerous city is like!
