Hi - we're planning to rent a furnished house for a while this winter as a base to explore the area for future potential relocation. We're debating between two choices. They're the same rent and either one would be fine with us although OB is really a home and Del Mar more a beach house. All of the communities where we might eventually buy a home are in between. We do want an area where we'll be comfortable living for the two months, and places nearby we can walk/bike/drive to. We're a quiet mature couple so don't need nightlife nearby (we're fine driving elsewhere for that) although a few good restaurants, grocery stores, etc. are desirable. We'd be about a mile SE of the pier in Ocean Beach (our realtor says it's a good block) and about a mile north of the main shopping in Del Mar (the house is nestled next to Camino del Mar).

Any thoughts either way? I'm guessing both communities have different personalities off season. Thanks!

"quiet, mature couple" - Del Mar rather than OB, absolutely.

Del Mar absolutely any day of the week over Ocean Beach. We really love Del Mar and spend quite a bit of time there. Great environment. Ocean Beach actually has stores with stickers in the window that say, "Please don't feed our bums".

I think you will really enjoy Del Mar quite a bit.

^^This! Although it sounds like you'd be in the Sunset Cliffs area near OB, which is also quite nice and closer to where the action is (driving distance, of course)

We may split the visit between the two. The OB place is in the Sunset Cliffs area, a few blocks from the ocean. Sounds like we'd probably want to avoid the pier area (although the Farmer's Market sounds interesting) and maybe "hang out" more towards Point Loma.

The worst panhandling I've seen was actually in Philadelphia! We were in Portland, Oregon last year and I'd read it was bad there but we didn't have any problems.

If you can split the visit, you should! Those areas are *totally* different from each other, so if you have the opportunmity to experince both, I sa y go for it.

And yeah, avoid the pier area if you can except for the farmers' market- it's one of the best in town.
