Hi there! My husband got a job in San Diego, in Rancho Bernardo so we are going to move some time next year. We have two kids aged 5 1/2 and 2 1/2. So we would really appreciate your advice about a quiet area with a good school (preschool as a start) and a kindergarden as well around San Diego. Thank you very much for your advices

All public schools systems in the United States include Kindergarten, so there is no need to look for one separately. Your local school will come with one.

The schools in the Rancho Bernardo area and the City of Poway, are all considered quite good, so if that is your primary determinant for choosing a neighborhood, look to these two areas. However, just so you know, this is quintessential post-WWII, auto-centric suburbia. You will be driving to get anyplace you want to go. This might be a bit of an adjustment coming from Denmark.

Poway is pretty, with many parks though the poster is right, California is a car culture. Shopping is varied but most American shopping is in large grocery stores not the small community markets. prices are competitive. Costco is a warehouse distributor and quality of food and prices are better IMO. Weather is mild. Coldest I have seen was this morning at 37F. Weather is spring and summer is warm but rarely near 100F. Scripps Clinic and Sharp are the biggest medical services providers. Rady's is the Children's Hospital. All provide very good access and care.

I think that you may like the area. People are easygoing and friendly mostly.

Can't advise of preschools and kindergarten.

Welcome.

I'd suggest the same places I mentioned in this thread:
//www.city-data.com/forum/san-d...an-2012-a.html

And yes, Rancho Bernardo and everywhere around it are quite suburban.

It is not what it seems...

Jeg gik paa Stella Maris Academy - Welcome to Stella Maris Academy — Stella Maris Academy

Just for the record, I am European and have been living quite happily in the Rancho Bernardo/Poway area for over 2 years. I know other Europeans (and plenty of others from many different parts of the world) who live in this area and who seem to be perfectly happy too. This area is very diverse, not everybody who lives here is white, Republican or racist. There may be other areas in San Diego that are more liberal leaning, but then you'll have to deal with the daily commute.

I would ask at your husband's company for relocation assistance. They might have someone who can help. One site that I found useful when trying to locate schools for my kids when we moved is www.greatschools.org. The public school district for this area is Poway Unified. You can also search for preschools on that site.

Peter-Christian, I don't post much on this board, although I visit often. As you can see, I'm a long-time CD member. I just want to point out a few things: While it may seem friendly to post in the OP's language, it is rude to the the rest of us who would like to take part in the conversation. As it happens, I do read Danish, and I compliment you on your command of the language, but please post your advice in English, or DM the OP directly.

Another thing, referring to your post: Don't assume all Danes are aching to live in politically progressive areas! You don't know the OP's background--we don't even know if they've been to the US before. You're absolutely right that an area like Rancho Bernardo will seem alien to a Northern European, because of the lack of a walkable downtown among other things, and that the coastal communities will offer more social ambiance, but the OP will need time to adjust, and it's better to adjust closer to the workplace until they get comfortable with our car culture. IMHO.

Bonita and Eastlake will not be an easy commute to Rancho Bernardo. Same from Coronado. And if La Jolla seems mega-expensive, Coronado will be at least the same or more so.

I agree completely with the descriptions of Poway/Rancho Bernardo.

That leaves the central areas and North County Coastal (Encinitas, Solana Beach).

I (though I know I'm in the minority) enjoy 'hearing' other people's languages. And for those who would also like to take part, Google's translator did a fine job of translating (I didn't even have to tell it that was Danish!)
