I am in the same exact situation & was wondering how I'd be able to pick a place without seeing it- I am moving next June and transferring within my job. I've visited San Diego a few times and couldn't be more excited about the move, sick of NY and am ready to get out!

I'm just afraid of blindly picking an apartment...I don't know anyone even NEAR San Diego and I don't have the time to visit again before the move so I've been looking around online for apartments within a 10 mile radius of the Miramar Marine Corps Air station- I was mainly looking north since it'd be cheaper than being closer to downtown San Diego.

A couple communities I've been looking at online:

Riviera de Ville (Clairemont Mesa East)
3235 Armstrong St, San Diego CA

Padre Gardens (Mission Valley)
10343 San Diego Mission Rd

Balboa Plaza
6699 Beadnell Way

Any chance anyone knows about these units? My main search guidelines are under $1,100/month for a 1br with parking that I can bring my cat to. (driving a cat across the country...that'll be an experience!) I'm not picky about a gym, pool, washer/dryer or any of that...just not a dump & not dangerous.

Check out www.apartmentratings.com and also look up crime statistics by googling the name of the town with those terms.
Posters here can also chime in about neighborhoods, if not exactly an apartment complex you're considering.

I've actually googled several apartment complexes I've been considering but the reviews scare me- and people usually put in the effort to complain if they had a poor experience vs. making note of a positive one so the bad reviews overpower the good ones so I don't really trust the reviews...which is weird since I'm asking strangers what they think about the properties on here anyway! haha...

Having moved around quite a bit and exploring many new digs, there are exaggerations and lies on that website (mostly by management painting a rosy picture of their dump). The "balanced" reviews will generally give you the real scoop, with both positives and negatives. No place is perfect, but once you learn to interpret the reviews, you can easily separate the good from the bad.
I'll have a look at the places you mentioned and see if I can figure something out.

OK, back after doing some reading. There's only one review for Padre Gardens, but I'd probably put that at the head of the list and the Riviera place at the bottom. The fair reviews are easy to spot.
