You should go to Coronado and the beaches by the Hotel Del. . . rated one of the best family beaches in the US- - Have fun

If not Coronado, which is an excellent choice, try Torrey Pines State Beach just south of the Del Mar/San Diego City border. It's much less congested, and quieter than Pacific and Mission beaches. The area is much more natural and less developed than either PB/MB or Coronado. There is extensive parking and restrooms available, though given that it will be Labor Day weekend and quite warm, parking will definitely be at a premium.

RECOMMENDED: North County Beaches (Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, Del Mar Beach, Carlsbad, et. al.); Coronado Beach; La Jolla Cove and the adjacent LJ beaches and parks... all wonderful.

Avoid the Four B's: Mission, Pacific, Ocean, and Imperial Beaches -- pure riff-raff, panhandlers, dope fiends, and human waste. You're liable to step on a needle whilst sloughing through the sand, get mowed over by a tweeked-out skater, get caught in the crossfire of a gangbanger fracus, be accosted by an aggressive panhandler, or catch a crack contact high from a scumbag smokin a rock by the seawall.

I also recommend San Onofre up in extreme North County (bordering Orange). Breathtaking views and pristine beach.

Black's Beach, due west of the UCSD campus off Torrey Pines Rd., is a spectacular, a formidable adventure, and a truly unique, rustic hills-cliff-beach-ocean experience. Not crowded. Careful: the nudists hang out on the north end of this beach. But they're basically harmless. Black's is the most awe-inspiring and relaxing beach in Southern California, for my money.
