How is the area just west of the 15 in Escondido?, possibly moving to manufactured home there from Chicago. I know Stone brewery is there and a lot of restaurants.

Are you specifically speaking of the neighborhood off Nordahl? I live about 5 minutes away (for all 23 years of my life); it's a very safe and family friendly area.

The only way you can say there's "a lot of restaurants" in that area is if by "restaurant" you mean chains like Panera and La Salsa and In and Out. Escondido is NOT the place to live if you're into food.

Not so much, at least as I can see.

We got ourselves a pizza stone (unglazed earthenware tile from Home Depot - don't pay big buck$$$ for a fancy one from a kitchen place). We buy the plainest thin-crust pizza from Trader Joe or Costco, and add our own toppings. We like that better than pizza from any restaurant.

I'm told (haven't yet tried it myself) that Stone Flats Pizza in Mira Mesa (just east of I-15) is pretty good.

StoneFlats is 'meh'. I really like the chipotle style concept, however the actual food was average.

Yes buying the dough from TJ is really good

If you havent tried yet, my wife buys itlian tipo 00 flour and makes dough from scratch.
We use a pizza stone (like you, from Home Depot) on the grill. Pre-heat for about 20 mins so it gets HOT. Pizza cooks in ~8 mins and has an beautiful crust. Brush a little EV oilive oil prior to sauce and toppings and its heaven

Esco is very hit or miss. The west side isn't too bad. North above 78 and South below 9th Ave ext are your best areas.

As for food...big developements here recently. 5 Guys will be open soon right off of West Valley Parkway. In N Out is about to face some competition.

There are some other hidden gems- I personally like Rockin Jenny's its a Sandwich/Italian Eatery. In n' Out is close too, Stone Brewery (very overrated and pricey in the food dept. for me)...I'm still looking for a good chinese place. If you like to BBQ- Major Market is an under the radar type grocery/deli that is also in Esco. I've given up on Pizza in San Diego- please don't let the natives try to convince you. If you are coming from Chicago get your pizza fill before you move out here.
