Escondido has some areas that are great, and some that are iffy.

For a home on an acre or so you might want to look at north Escondido. A home on an acre in Poway is gonna' cost you mega-bucks. Is Ramona too far away for you?

If having a larger lot is your priority then go with Escondido or Vista. The schools are questionable, but you can get more bang for your buck. The Buena Creek area in Vista is really nice and more rural. The non-Shadowridge part of South Vista also has some larger lots and is a nicer area with better schools. The southwestern part of Escondido (Felicita area) and San Pasqual Valley have large lots and the schools are better than the rest of Escondido.

Homes in San Marcos are around the same price as Escondido & Vista, but the schools are better (more comparable to Poway Unified). However, the large lots are limited to Twin Oaks Valley, Coronado Hills/La Moree, and parts of Lake San Marcos. Rancho Bernardo similar to San Marcos because there are less large lots (more tract developments). However, these homes are much more expensive ($100,000+) because they are in Poway Unified.

Poway is the safest city in the county and has numerous large lots & estates to choose from. However, they are very expensive compared to homes in Escondido, Vista, and San marcos.

You may want to look into Bonsall because it is mainly comprised of custom homes on larger lots and the schools have a better reputation than surrounding areas.

All these suggestions are assuming you don't have a priority on commute time.
