Each year, this date in the U-T makes me simultaneously feel vindicated and incensed:

Worst traffic bottlenecks in the county? | UTSanDiego.com

Yep, that's my commute home at #1 for a third straight year.

Bottleneck appears on 98% of workday evening commutes.

The city planner should be rounded up and given some Old West justice for this abomination.

Call Caltrans and tell them how you feel.

[focus your frustration on the responsible entity]

The good news (from the article) is that they are working on it this year and should be finished with it by the end of 2012.

The unstated bad news is that it probably means that the commute is going to be worse than ever for this upcoming year.

I'm not one of those people who claim San Diego traffic is horrible (I've driven in Washington DC, Philadelphia, and Boston and find those worse) - - but this stretch of 78 is truly awful.

The first time I had to drive though it at rush hour, I thought there was a fatal accident. Then after talking to some colleagues that pass through that way, pretty much summed up what this thread is all about.

Far too many communities off Barham area that need access to and from the 78 and 15, but just too far for using the 56.

Luckily for me I planned my housing purchase in San Diego well. I live 8 miles from my office and can drive home on city streets or freeways depending on my choice. I work in Mission Valley, and wanting the urban experience (my ex-husband, kids and I did the suburbs in San Diego for years) am loving not having to deal with the commute issues. I spent a few years driving from Poway/Rancho Bernardo to Golden Hill/Mission Bay areas and don't miss the commute at all. Urban is more gritty and some of the areas aren't a feast for the eyes, but I enjoy being so close to everything San Diego has to offer. The cherry on top is no yucky commutes.

Our traffic issues are laughable in comparison to a lot of east coast cities, LA, etc.

Yup, the 78 sucks. I don't have much call to drive that stretch of highway, thank goodness.

I remember back in the 90s when all my friends were doing the get married, buy a house thing. Many opted for the newer, bigger house that they had to commute to. We chose to buy a beater, gut it and build the house we wanted close to down town. I still cringe when they (the ones still living the outer edge) tell me about the 2 hour a day commutes.

They have medication for this, I suggest seeing a doctor and seek some.
