Hello,

Just moved to San Diego (Imperial Beach) about a month ago, and have built two 4 foot by 8 foot by eight inch deep raised beds for my wife to start her gardening project this spring. The trouble is, I'm not sure where to get soil for the beds. Two beds that size make 1.6 cubic yards of soil (~43 cu ft).

Evergreen Nursery will sell it by the cubic yard, but have a minimum 5 yard delivery, which is way too much soil. Buying stuff by the bag from Home Depot is an option, but not cheap, and I thought maybe there's a better local option for something made for raised beds. I *don't* have access to a truck (though I could rent one), so I'd prefer delivery or bagged soil so I can do several trips with the sedan. Any advice is appreciated!

You can buy bagged soil from Walmart, and sometimes Costco has it in the spring.

If you have some kind of community email list, perhaps you could ask if someone else wants to go in with you to buy the 5 cubic yards of soil jointly.

If you look on Craigslist (For Sale > Farm+Garden), there are several listings for free topsoil. Just rent / borrow a truck and it's yours.

That size is tricky. Its too small for a deliver (as you mentioned) but too big for the sedan without multiple trips.

I would ask your neighbors about their landscaper contacts or look for any local landscapers in IB or Chula Vista. Busier landscapers will buy soil in bulk and if they are in the area, may even deliver it

Been down this road!
Hate to say it, but your best option is probably home depot.
Most nursery's and waste/junk yards(yes they sell soil in bulk)or going to cost you.
Stick with "Patio Plus By Kellogg's" it' the best stuff home depot has and it's fairly cheap!

I am in the same situation as you. Maybe we can split the cost of renting a truck and pick up the soil at the same time. I am in Point Loma.
