So I'll be moving to San Diego and will need a job...

Anyways, I'm in Automotive Sales, currently working at an all used car dealership. I am hoping to do the same in San Diego! I am wondering what the average income is for people in car sales? I realize it depends on what sort of car, new or used, based on commission, how many years you've been in the field, etc. I am just trying to compare earnings and pay plans so I know if my level of sales will be enough of a career for me to get by in SD.

I am currently in my first year, make an hourly rate of $18/hr working 40 hours a week. I have a possibility of up to $1000 in bonuses per month depending how my team performs. In 2011 I made approximately 38k total.

In Minnesota, non-commission based and no negotiating stores are extremely common. Hence the hourly pay plan. Do california automotive groups match up to something similar? Or does the average beginner sales person make much more because cost of living is higher? Just trying to get a feel as to how much money I'll need to make in order to afford living in California.

Thanks!

I can't answer too many questions, but I know that CarMax is hiring. How do I know this? They've got a big "work for us" sign in the lobby.

I saw the CNBC special on the job. It seems like a whole lot of work for not enough money to me!

I think the answer is totally going to depend on what type of car dealership. I heard many of the jobs here are mostly all commission based with car sales. One of my good friends works at an Audi dealership. I'll ask him about your question.

I know he does fairly well. Bought enough to buy a nice condo in Carlsbad and travels internationally a few times a year. I'll ask him about this and post back.

Thanks! You're right it definitely depends on the brand. I suppose the only way I'll get a straight answer is to call some stores and ask. What are some major auto groups in Cali? Ones you see advertising for everywhere?

I had a friend who was a car salesman, unfortunately the dealerships are commission based. He worked at Nissan and didn't get paid a dime until a car was sold. I don't know if all places are like that still but there are toooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnssssssss of car dealerships in San Diego there's so many opportunities, and yes CarMax is hiring they just opened a new location in Escondido
