It's a sad day for freedom in San Diego. Looks like the Supreme Court is not going to interfere with CSU San Diego's smackdown of Christian groups on campus. The ruling impacts all campuses of the CSU system which are similarly discriminatory.

Christian groups at San Diego State lose appeal over policy forcing them to admit atheists if they want official recognition

"According to the Alliance Defense Fund, which represented the sorority (Alpha Delta Chi) and the fraternity (Alpha Gamma Omega), 'San Diego State prohibited campus Christian organizations from requiring their members and leaders to agree with the organization’s statement of faith, but allowed other student organizations to require members and leaders to agree with the viewpoints the groups advocate.'

As a consequence of the SDSU policy (similar to one in effect at all campuses of the California State University system), Alpha Delta Chi and Alpha Gamma Omega cannot receive funding as do other student groups, cannot use university communications or the SDSU logo, and have been denied access to university facilities."

It's only a sad day for freedom if you're a Christian who wants your groups to be exclusionary but still have the use of public facilities provided by everone.

It's a huge win for freedom for the rest of us.

This isn't anything new - they want official recognition from a government entity, and that includes the benefits therein - to enjoy those benefits, the group isn't allowed to discriminate.

They could still operate on campus without official recognition, they could even use school facilities.

Also, an atheist group likewise can't deny membership to religious persons - if it wants official recognition.

Christians whining about persecution in this country are such a joke.

It's not bigotry to demand that groups that take public funding not discriminate against others based on race, color, national origin, gender, or religion. In fact, that's what this country is supposed to be all about.

Now, if a privately funded organization wants to do so, that's fine. Start taking public funds, and it's a whole different story.

I think all of these groups are a scam. Whether they are religious in nature, ethnicity-based, or political, none of them should be endorsed by the university. The students are forced to pay a $100 - $300 yearly fee to support these officially endorsed groups. Many of them have viewpoints that are antipathetic to the personal views of individual students. The fees are given legitimacy because they are voted in by the student government which is controlled by certain groups. However, if this was in the adult world it would be the equivalent of the Utah State Government, or the Massachusetts State Government voting taxpayer subsidies to the the Republican party only, or the Democratic party only. These organizations are ideological and political, and no student should be forced to contribute to any of them through a mandatory fee.

What are some of the other student organizations that require members and leaders to agree with their viewpoints?
