Hello all,

There's a possibility that my job may relocate me to San Diego. Is it possible to find a decent home for $1000 or less?

Thanks so much!

Audrey

It doesn't look like it, unless you have roommates, or unless 'home' turns out to be something like a studio apartment. Have a look at this thread:

I did see a decent 3 bedroom, 1 bath house, (yes an actual house) for $1800 month in Talmadge. It was on a busy street.

There might be 2 bedroom 1 bath houses (Say 800 square feet) for $1400 to $1500 in reasonable locations. Below $1400 you are either in not-very-nice areas, or you are in a 2 bedroom apartment. $1000 per month, will put you into older two bedroom apartments, or somewhat newer 1 bedroom apartments.

That San Diego blue skies and sunshine isn't free. It may seem like its free, but you have to standing on some land to enjoy it. And land ain't free.

I guess "decent" is a totally subjective term. But I don't think you can get any decent home rental for your price range.

San Diego is one of the most expensive rental markets in the country and the rental market here in good areas is pretty hot.

We rented a 3 bedroom townhouse in Carmel Valley while we were waiting to close on our house and it was $2,700 a month.

Our house was ready sooner than we thought. I had prepaid the entire 6 months rent before when the lease started. I was amazed that the owner agreed to refund the unused months and said, "the rental market is super hot here and I won't have a problem finding another tenant so you can get a refund".

That's the first time I've ever seen anything like that and really told me how strong the rental market here is in good properties in good areas.

Not everyone wants to live/rent up North from Downtown. Personally, I'd become homicidal if I had to commute from there. You can find a house around the 52 for that price range no problem.

I have buddies that bought up there and all they do is complain about the commute. No thanks, a commute shouldn't be an hour each way. It has been taking me 45 min to go from LJ BL to Balboa on the days I have to be up there. If I don't leave by 3pm I'm royally screwed. It doesn't matter the 5 or 805 and it doesn't seem to matter whether the am rush or pm rush hours.
