I'm a 41 y.o. SWF artist/graphic designer originally from NYC. I'm considering moving to San Diego. I'm wondering if someone like me would like it. I'm afraid I would miss the excitement of NYC.

You might miss it.SD is very laid-back,slow and low key compared to New York City.

That seems like a question that only you can answer.

If you want to move west but really prefer to live in a NYC-like environment, complete with excitement and something akin to a borough-like city layout you should probably be considering moving to San Francisco.

I have several ex-NYC friends, they like it here- - - enough arts/theater/music to satisfy them. Obviously, we're not New York or as urban as SF- - - you should visit and see if you enjoy the "vibe"

I would move to San Francisco in a heartbeat, but one of the things driving me out of NYC is the unattainable cost of real estate. Isn't SF even more expensive?

I don't think it's as expensive as NYC, at least not as expensive as Manhattan, but it's definitely a close second. I'm sure people in the SF forum could give you a much more accurate estimate of current rent ranges per neighborhood-- SF's vacancy/rent rate is highly variable depending on where you live in the city. When I lived there four years ago, I lived in a nice one bedroom with about 750sq.ft. in the Sunset for about $1400/mo. It used to be that you could live in a 1br in the Mission for around $1100/mo, but with all the gentrification I HIGHLY doubt you could get away with that now. I haven't seen prices below $1000 in SF since right after the big earthquake in '89. With a busted up bay bridge and half the Marina sunk into landfill, some real deals were to be had back then.

Really though, if you had earlier mentioned that you were leaving NYC due to housing costs, I probably wouldn't have suggested SF. However the impression I got from your OP was that you were looking for something like NYC, except on the west coast. That would be SF, high prices and all.

My apologies to everyone for turning this into a SF thread.
