One reason I can think of why camping on San Diego beach sand is not permitted is the distance between the roadside/boardwalk and the ocean is generally not that long, so it might become dangerous when the tide comes in.

Some San Diego beaches can be completely submersed during high tide.

I remember not too long ago, they were thinking of getting rid of the fire pits. Did that ever going through? I see fire pits all the time at some of our beaches but I'm not sure if we are allowed to use them anymore?

They had been privately funded through donations. At least the ones in OB.

Thanks for all the responses so far guys. I have to run to work, but I'll take a more thorough look at the recommended beaches tomorrow. Does anyone have any experience camping at Carlsbad?

I haven't camped there, but it'll have the same drawbacks as San Elijo (train and highway noise).
