Get rid of everything that you don't need, even if you think you do. Start checking prices for a PODs container.
The company will deliver it to you, you pack it, you call them to pick it up, then it's stored in a warehouse until you get to your destination. When you call and give them your new address, it's delivered to your new residence.

There are other companies besides PODs that do this. I assume that you're driving since you have a dog.

It cost me around $2800 to move all my stuff here. That was for a one bedroom apartment, and I did the packing myself.

It's not that much more expensive than a U-Haul after you factor in putting the car on the dolly, the hotel stays, and the gas for the truck.

I think that's a really wise decision... Traffic can be really hellish on I-5. I can't imagine anyone purposely choosing to make that commute every day.

One of my friends lives in San Clemente and really enjoys it. I agree with the others to live close to where you work. Life will be much less stressful that way.

Good luck with the move.

Move to Laguna Niguel and you can easily make it to Dana Point, or Laguna Beach whenever you want. To drive from San Diego to LN on a daily basis would be hellish.

I would pack as many bags to the weight limit in vacuum sealed bags that the airline I was flying would allow and than add a carryon that was packed with a clothes. The rest I would Fedex or UPS the same way.

Paying movers is probably not worth that cost and they can take several weeks for that long of a trip if you are not their priority move.

I've made a few cross country moves and honestly if your paying out of pocket you are probably better off trying to sell everything and use that cash (plus what you'd lose on shipping) to buy new things when you arrive. I have moved twice with just two suitcases, although for a guy in his 20's with little extra money or fashion sense that was all that I need.

I have not found a place yet. Im looking for a house or (townhouse, cottage) a place that accepts dogs and is close to the beach. Any recommendations.

Post the question in the Orange County forum, and you might have better luck.
