Crazy story. The guy did NOT follow park service advice and stayed WAY TOO CLOSE to the bear for way too long. Sorry the guy died but he did not act wisely.

As the story says:
"Photos on the camera and the images' timestamps showed that White (the mauled hiker) was within 50 yards of the bear for at least eight minutes, without retreating. Permitted backcountry travelers in Denali are required to stay at least a quarter-mile from bears and leave the area if they happen upon one, Anderson said."

Another Darwin candidate for this year. That's crazy. I read there were 4 big bears in the area.

It's sad and unfortunate but this guy should have left the area instead of taking photos for 10 minutes.....

It's also very sad they had to kill the bears due to this situation.

Two years ago a hiker repelled an attack by a large bear which was wounded and retreated. Of course (legal) one may not carry a weapon the National Parks (including Alaska) however the shooting was ruled justified. The bear was later found wounded and was put down. The man hit it 5 times with a Magnum pistol.

The animals in the park have no fear of man and for this reason the victims actions are particularly naive. That said, it's always a judgment call to shoot or not. Most bear charges are false charges, however with these bears they are known to attack when provoked e.g. perhaps the man was in between the mother and a cub or two.

My home in Alaska has frequent visitors including moose (which actually by numbers kill more humans than bear). Typically the social velocity is to high for a bear to show up however cooking meat with an open window brings unique challenges. Who would think a Marlin 45-70 or a Mossberg 12 gauge would be a cooking asset near the chef...?

I think sometimes people just can't imagine or comprehend what a wild animal can do. Even with a suitable rifle shotgun and handgun like a Casul 454 it would be a challenge to hit and to kill a charging 700 lb grizzly bear.

he shouldn't have sat there for 8 minutes snapping photos and it sucks that the bear had to be killed when all this could have been avoided

Curiousity got the best of him. Not too smart to be that close.

They should have left and came back in the morning so they could be certain it was the right bear. For all they know another bear moved in after they scared the killer off.
