We shopped around and used competing quotes to get the best price. Saved about $500 from the initial quote! Renting a truck ended up being the least expensive route.

We used ABF U-Pack to move from SD to NC back in '08. No complaints. I know a lot of similar services have popped up since. Just know that, since you pack the containers, damage is ultimately on you, so pack well! I had my motorcycle in one container, and it somehow managed to break free of its tethers, by some strange luck, it managed to balance itself on the kickstand the entire way, but did suffer a few minor scratches from where it had rocked back the other way and rubbed against a tire I had left in to act as a 'last chance' bumper.

Get rid of everything that you don't need and can be replaced easily.

I agree....Spring clean and get rid of anything you are not attached to! Just so your aware, the big moving companies, will not take take any aeorsal type cans, nor will they move garage items like paints, oils or anything combustible. If you have a smaller load, you'll be loaded with someone else's smaller load headed in the same direction, so it could take longer for you stuff to appear. We moved our entire household via Atlas and towed a small u-haul trailer behind our truck, since my husband had so much "car stuff". Pack yourselves (as we did) and you'll save yourself tons of money. Boxes, paper/wraps, tape, etc. can be bought a Cheapboxes. com. Order one day and they are at your doorstep the following day with no delivery fees. I saved hundreds of dollars in doing this and even the moving agent said the boxes were of quality cardboard. You may also be able to find used packing boxes in the paper. I gave ours away to a family in need. Good luck with your move!

You can find lots of boxes at liquor stores, they put them outside. If you don't see any, ask when they put them out, or if they'll hold them for you.

Just as a FYI...boxes that come from liquor stores/grocery stores, can be "inhabited". When we moved my MIL out of her house we opted to go that way. We opened one box to find the eggs of some insect had hatched. NEVER again!

Sell everything that can be sold and keep only what you need to travel and live comfortably the first few days after you get to your new home. That would be clean clothes, hygiene products, towels, toilet paper, paper towels, any sentimental items that can fit in a box and put in the trunk of the vehicle. Otherwise it can be replaced when you get where you are going with minimal cost.

I don't know about Buffalo, but at least here on craigslist there's at least one or two people giving away their moving boxes when they're done with them.

I've never had that happen at all, and that's where I get all my boxes. I refuse to to pay for boxes when I can get all I want for free. I have lots of boxes with boxes inside of them, and they're stacked up in every empty space in my cottage, because I hope to move next. With the boxes already here, I'll have a head start on packing when I put down a deposit on a new place.
