This Christmas, rather than our tradition of cooking too much food and sitting around in front of the television on Christmas day, I'd like to give my 15 year old son a new tradition of serving others--so I've contacted a number of shelters to see if we might volunteer on Christmas day.

Afterward, it would be nice to find some place (not horribly expensive) to have Christmas dinner with my son, my fiance, and his sister.

Do any of the San Diego natives have recommendations? I've never gone out for Christmas dinner, always cooked--so I'm a little at a loss.

Thanks!

We haven't done it at Christmas, but a couple of times we've gone to the casino buffet restaurants for Thanksgiving. Once at Valley View, once at Pechanga, once at Pala (which was a bit pricey). The food is surprisingly good for buffets ... these are definitely a cut up from Hometown Buffet.

I agree with oddstray... the local casinos offer great holiday brunches. The food quality and selection is excellent

For something a little closer to town, try Humphreys on Shelter Island:

I think the Zoo is doing something. They did for Thanksgiving. Pretty cool if you ask me!

I have a 15 year old. I know at least one of the casinos doesn't allow kids at the buffet.

We plan on volunteering at a shelter so I'll need a recommendation that will be serving after 5 most likely.

Thanks!
