People self-identify, so it is likely the filipino population couldn't choose just one. Since they were such a large population, it would also cause population percentages to total over 100% if given the ability to choose more than 1 race (+ (non)hispanic).

Filipinos have spanish, american, malay, polynesian, and chinese ancestries. It's easier to categorize them as one group.

Well, there are cultural similarities with Filipinos and Hispanics, and Filipinos and "Asians", but I don't see them as the same. It is good that the Filipino group is not lumped into other generic groups much like Indians(Hindus) are lumped in with Asians.

This is one thing that bugs me about El Cajon, Chaldeans are a huge minority but statistacally they are lumped in with whites (Americans). Yes, some can pass for "white" while others are more brown and very few are almost black but it is not the same group of people when compared to your hard core local East County folks.

As younger Americans (less than 40), inclusiveness and cultural diversity has been indoctrinated into our way of thinking both at school and in the work place. At my company, with exception to Exectutive leadearship (fortune 500 company which tends to be older, white, and male), we are a diverse lot from different backgrounds and parts of the world and there is absolutely no awkwardness due to differences in culture. I think that as younger Americans, we have a harder time associating with people from older generations than we do folks of different cultures.

At any rate, my point is that I don't think cultural diversity is valued any less at other schools than MM High.
