It depends on whether you're just using your id, a Passport Card, or a Sentri Pass. If you're just using your id, expect to be in line for a while, possible two hours or more. No on can tell you how long it'll take you to get out of Mexico.

Bad Timing. Change your train to the earliest possible. Keep in mind the first trolley out of San Ysidro boards at 4:45am. It will take about an hour to get to Santa Fe Depot where your train to LA will be located.

To avoid lines cross at ***2am on any weekday and you will zip right across. Eat breakfast at the 24/7 Jack N The Box Or MC Donalds until the trolley starts up....or else SUFFER.

I do not have a Ready or Sentri pass....without one, the best times to walk back across the border are Monday - Thursday nights any time past 8:00PM.....even then, plan on minimum 20+ minutes (I have not encountered an hour or two hour wait at those times--at least not yet)...I would avoid the weekends at all costs, unless coming back well past midnight (even then, I would avoid the weekends). Whatever you do, remember to bring your passport.

The lines are longer in the morning and during the day.
