Hello, I am considering moving from Dallas, TX within a year to San Diego. Are there any towns a short distance from San Diego that have affordable housing but not high in crime?

The Eastlake part of the city of Chula Vista is safe and pretty close to downtown San Diego.

What part of San Diego will you be working in?

Depends on what you consider "short distance." A lot of people like myself live in North County and work in San Diego proper. I live in Vista (along the 78 corridor) and spend about an hour in the morning and hour coming back each day for my work in La Jolla. It's like 38 miles each way.

Basically, once you hit south of Carlsbad on the 5, rental and home prices skyrocket. Then you hit Mira Mesa area and things lower, but it's all relative...price/crime, etc.

Need more info

I agree with the others. It all depends on YOUR definition of "short distance" and also what your definition of "affordable" is?

You have to define what you consider affordable housing. Are you thinking of buying a house or renting? There are several areas that have low crime rates. We lived in Poway for 20 years which adjoins San Diego. Poway has a very low crime rate, is very family oriented, and has great schools. You also need to say what you are looking for. Do you want a family oriented area, beach area, etc.?
