I'm retired and am thinking of moving to Point Loma. I'd like to live in a quiet area --minimal airplane noise-- where I can buy a 2 or 3-bedroom house in the $550k -$625k range. Close-by grocery stores and restaurants are a plus. Am I looking at the right neighborhood?

You won't have minimal airplane noise anywhere in Point Loma, the inventory in that price range is very low, and while pleasant and walk able there are not a lot of centralized restaurants to walk to as much of Point Loma is kind of suburban designed. What is nice is there are a lot of grocery stores from large chain supermarkets to smaller indendent grocery stores. Would you consider a condo/townhouse? There might be more options. Also for what it is worth, I have lived under the flight path in 2 different places (incoming, and now out going) and you really don't even notice it unless you have company and they forget to stop talking for the few seconds it takes a plane to pass!

As Clevelandgal already said... minimal airplane noise and Point Loma don't really go together. You'll hear some airplane noise all over the Point Loma peninsula.

Also, Point Loma gets more than its share of cloudy days and chilly weather. We used to live in Sunset Cliffs (the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula) and there always seemed to be a chill in the air. It could be a cloudy 65 degrees in Sunset Cliffs and a sunny 85 degrees in Rancho Bernardo at the exact same time.

All things considered, we loved living in the Point Loma area. The plane noise didn't bother us at all. But the housing is typically old, needs extensive updating, and expensive. In your price range, you'll need to make lots of compromises in Point Loma.

We just discovered La Playa Cove, a short distance from restaurants and stores, and I don't remember any really significant airplane noise during the hour or so we spent there, walking along the water. I'd assume property values exceed your limit, but my goodness, what a lovely neighborhood! I'd check it out if I were you, just for the heck of it.

Very nice place with beautiful views but not so close to the freeways.

Please, perish this thought. Point Loma is full of beautiful custom homes built from the 1920s through the 1960s. Updating any home in Point Loma should be done with great care and with proper attention to preserving the many architectural gems which fill the area.

^ yes this. I would rather have one of those places with original tile in the bathroom and kitchen than one with the obligatory granite and stainless steel. Not that there is anything wrong with either of these materials, I just think people sometimes go over board.

The house we rented in Sunset Cliffs was built in 1928. The owner spent over $1M expanding and updating this house to maintain its architectural elegance. However, when he sold it I don't think he made a dime. He referred to the place as a big money pit with a great ocean view.

It is very nice area but it is very expensive, many of the old homes were not well maintained, restored or updated in the 600k range, or alternatively are nice but very small.
