Gutsy cover letter. My friend on Wall Street forwarded it to me a few days ago and I see it has gone viral now.

That's one way of getting a summer internship. I heard he's received several offers already. Good for him!

AAARGH!!! It's good, but I would think that any undergraduate worth hiring at an investment bank could write a letter like this. Has our educational system sunk so low that this piece of writing is considered an extraordinary accomplishment?

I think the point of it isn't the quality of writing. It's the fact that unlike most cover letters, it's not 100% a selling-oneself piece of semi-fiction.

Exactly, it's NOT the quality of the writing. Actually the letter was poorly written with several mistakes and typos. It didn't even look like he proof-read it. The point is that it was full of honesty.

Trust me, in that industry you get all kinds of people asking for internships. It's so funny some of them. My friends always are emailing me copies of some of them. Most of them are telling you how wonderful they are, how smart they are, how talented they are, how they are going to conquer the world.

In the investment banking and venture capital world, you rarely get an honest letter that basically speaks to how mediocre you are. That's the rare thing here.

I can't recall ever seeing more hype over something as benign as this in my life.

I'm still trying to figure out what the big deal is.

Do people honestly think this is the first time someone has done something like this?

About ~20 years ago someone sent a video resume to a few Wall Street investment firms. It was the polar opposite of this cover letter.

That video resume showed the prospective intern snowboarding, dancing with beautiful women, karate chopping boards in half, and included a clip where he said he didn't associate with 'losers'.

It was hilariously arrogant and went viral quickly, but viral for video was much different back then -- before YouTube.

I don't get it honestly, most parents tell their children to sell themselves well to get what they want. But, now people that don't have much qualifications are glorified over those that may have tried for a good amount of their lives to get into such an investment firm? How do they know that the other people applying for the internships were lying and overselling themselves?

Pretty stupid if you ask me. But good for the kid..

Futbol,

I didn't see that one but I've read a lot of emails my friends send me. I guess you wouldn't understand this thing unless you were in the finance banking or investment banking industry. I'm sure that others have done similar type things but it's not the norm in the investment banking industry.

I guess the important thing is he got the job he wanted which isn't easy to do in that field. Good for him.

I'm glad the guy from SDSU got the job. He seems honest.
