I know this topic has probably been exhausted, but I'm wondering if someone can tell me the best neighborhoods for someone in my situation to move in. I'll be moving from NYC without a job (was laid off 2 months ago, but don't anticipate having trouble finding work, as I got offers here) and I can't really be paying more than $1200/mo in rent to live alone. I'd like a place with a friendly vibe, outdoorsy, has some nightlife, where I can possibly meet new friends or maybe even a guy. I don't want to have to hop into a car every time I want to go somewhere, if possible (I don't even own a car at this point). I thought the gaslamp was a bit young/fratty for my taste. I'd prefer to sublet for a bit before committing to a lease.

Thanks.

San Diego is very spread out, and if you happen to get a job out of the city, you may need to buy a car. It would be best to line up your job first. The public transportation here is nothing like it is in NYC, and the busses and trolleys don't run all night.

These neighborhoods are fine for what she wants, but she may have problems getting to work.

You should definitely think hard about whether you need a car. Even if you can get to work and get the basics of life via walking and public transportation, you will miss out on a lot of what San Diego has to offer without a car. It would be like living in NYC but never taking the subway or taxis. The reality is that most of Southern California is designed around the idea that most people will be driving automobiles.

That said, there are some good services like Car2Go that may make it unnecessary.

Like the transit system here, Car2Go can be a great resource for travel, but is limited by its service area- East to 15, North to Mission Valley, Northwest PB and South to Imperial. If you live and work in the central core the bus system is not bad, the #2 shoots up and down from downtown/Santa Fe Depot through 30th st. all the way up to Normal Heights every 10 minutes, but outside of the core it gets a little problematic and lengthy.

$1,200 a month is a little skimpy for the prime urban village areas as well, but you might get lucky, or at least think small.

If you move to Hillcrest, you will have plenty of opportunities to meet guys.

What does that even mean? I assume it's some sort of snark about Hillcrest being the "gay" part of town but in this context it doesn't even make sense.
