For now, I just dont think existing EVs have passed the personality test outside a minority of buyers to really make people jump on it. They are somewhat bland and really, besides the left brain benefits of EV, I just dont think the cars themselves may appeal to the masses yet. Nor do they have the mileage range to justify a jump.

I just bought a '14 Mazda6 which I am elated with and fairly am certain when I am ready to offload it, EVs will be a bit more mainstream and make more sense than right now.

EV is promising. Decades from now we should all be plugging in, with EV driving our homes, cars etc.

Now about that water situation....
Oh yeah, it will take a WHILE before this becomes mainstream. For sure over a decade.... but I agree up until now it was really boring but I do think that you'll have some of the major car makers all getting into the EV game.

Computers, cell phones, television, airline travel and virtually every other modern convenience that we take for granted today were at one time only affordable to the wealthy. EV's will take the same path.

EXACTLY! Excellent point gvillager. And so spot on target. That's the way I look at it as well. I tend to like to project out about a decade or so in the future and from what I can see things will be very bright at the possibilities out there.

Although I've been driving in the HOV lanes here both on I-5 and I-15 without them and drove past cops that gave me a friendly wave and I was alone. The good thing is the cars are so unique the cops know they are EV's. I know technically they can pull you over for not having the stickers on but so far the 3 times I've passed cops in the HOV lane they haven't pulled me over.

The superchargers are supposed to be amazing! I just got back from lunch with a fellow Tesla owner that just went to 3 superchargers. And he said at one of them he was charging at a rate of 300+ miles per hour.(He filled up his battery in less than 1 hour). All free for the life of ownership for Tesla Model S 85 owners.

At home with the high power wall charger the maximum recharge speed is about 60 miles per hour which is plenty good for me.
That could be why he got a white car, then...

The range is such that the superchargers are really only necessary for long trips - which is the point, right? The appeal of the Volt was that it was electric most of the time, but still has the gas generator so you don't actually need a second car for long trips. This allows you to have a car that is not so compromised.

Yes, they stopped at Harris Ranch on the way down to L.A and the car had charged up quite a bit - although, my brother's lead foot... I wonder what his true range is... it's ostensibly 300 miles at 65 miles an hour, right? But as you go faster, and wind resistant builds up, your "mileage" doesn't go down proportionally, I think it really goes down.

Yeah. White also looks really sweet. I think if I didn't go with black I would have went with the white. But to me, nothing looks better than a clean and freshly waxed black car.

Yep, the superchargers are only for longer range trips. For me, I don't travel too much long distance and the Model S is PERFECT for Southern California. And the future generations even if they have less range will be fine for the vast majority of people out there.

I'll definitely do more road trips now with the car as I enjoy driving now. Yep, as you mentioned, the faster you go the more battery you burn at a faster rate. The "rated miles" assumes some situations like normal AC/heat, and "reasonable" speeds.

I have a loaner car so they cap it to 80 MPH. They are actually smart. For a while, there were guys posting YouTube videos with service loaner cars going 130 MPH so Tesla limits loaner cars to 80 MPH which isn't too fun on the highway. You can see from my video I posted, I got pretty much the rated range being capped to 80 MPH. I mostly went that fast. I think I lost about 15 rated miles but probably not actually that many because I forgot I had to go a few miles out of the way to put air in the tire when I saw that warning. So maybe only lost 10 miles from what the car predicted I'd have.

But I noticed when I had my car I'd regularly go over 100 MPH and the battery drain would be faster. No, it doesn't go down proportionally. The faster you go the faster it burns and less rated miles.

But I agree with you about white looking good. When we order the Model X we will get the white one.

Gvillager,

Thanks again for posting this! I just got done watching this today. Wow, what a ride! Elon has quite a bit of luck. I guess timing is everything and luck never hurts either.

Fascinating watching it. Thanks again.

NEVER in my life did I ever think I'd reserve/order a car without test driving it! Well, I guess there is a first time for everything.

Just put down my deposit for the Model X. It doesn't come out until late 2014 which probably means early 2015 but can't wait.

You're buying another one? The Tesla dealer must love you.

Yes. It doesn't come out until the end of next year. But I already ordered it and put down the deposit. Actually there are no dealers so it's just Tesla. But yes, I'm sure they are happy. My regret was that I didn't buy the stock (TSLA) when I bought my first car! I could have paid for the car with the HUGE jump in the stock price!).

I'm # 5,874 on the list. That's how many people have ordered the Model X so far.

Model X | Tesla Motors

Skip to 12 minutes into the Video. That's the Model X. I'm replacing my Audi Q7 with this (what Elon drives besides his Model S as he has 5 kids). I'm wanting another kid next year so we'll need the room.
